Parish Church, Wingrave. Ref: v0271.
The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul (DOE 10/113) before its restoration, looking south-east from Winslow Road. The arch of a blocked up window is just visible on the left of the Chancel wall. Note the large number of burial mounds without gravestones. Grave-boards were often used instead of gravestones for the sake of economy. The ground level here drops about a metre from the church to the ‘road’. It was raised and levelled subsequently in 19?? The 1889 restoration revealed a priest’s cell, together with traces of medieval wall paintings. Much more recently there has been possible evidence of a tunnel between the Church and Church Farm House – and there had been a ‘priests cell’ in Church Farm House.
